Cloth diapering: Getting started

Once my son was born, I knew I would soon be starting cloth diapering him. I must admit, I was apprehensive at first. The idea of washing diapers and not bring sure if I was doing it right was pretty scary.

I had one pack of newborn size disposables that I had received at our baby shower. My goal was to not buy any disposables. At about three weeks of age, once his umbilical stump fell off and the circumcision had healed, I knew it was time.

My diaper had been prepped and assembled for a while at that point. I began with 4 a day, only during the day. I had based my stash mostly on gDiapers with a two pack of Bumgenius 4.0 one size. The gDiapers are so cute! However, my whole plan on cloth diapers would soon change.

Life with a newborn is hard enough, that lack of sleep and meals can really take its toll on a woman. I was finding myself being too preoccupied with my newborn to take the time to wash and sun dry and clip and double stuff… Etc etc. As cute as they are: gDiapers were too much work. To top it off: we had leak issues.

This led me to trying out the Bumgenius 4.0. I was immediately sold! Once I set the microfiber inserts to the right size, Stuffing the pocket was simple. The fit and absorbency was perfect.

Once I ordered enough BGs to complete my stash I found myself cloth diapering full time… I haven’t touched a disposable since.

Moral of the story: don’t let the fear of getting started stop you. Not everyone is ready to dive in head first the first time. Start off in short spurts if necessary. Most importantly, beware that not every diaper works great for everyone. It’s always best to start off with a little bit of a few brands. There are diaper trials available through a few sites. If you decide to just purchase a few, rest assured that you can always resell the ones you didn’t like on eBay.

Happy cloth diapering!
