Cloth diapering: Getting started

Once my son was born, I knew I would soon be starting cloth diapering him. I must admit, I was apprehensive at first. The idea of washing diapers and not bring sure if I was doing it right was pretty scary.

I had one pack of newborn size disposables that I had received at our baby shower. My goal was to not buy any disposables. At about three weeks of age, once his umbilical stump fell off and the circumcision had healed, I knew it was time.

My diaper had been prepped and assembled for a while at that point. I began with 4 a day, only during the day. I had based my stash mostly on gDiapers with a two pack of Bumgenius 4.0 one size. The gDiapers are so cute! However, my whole plan on cloth diapers would soon change.

The Cloth Diaper Decision

I was 20 years old when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. At that point I think I was overwhelmed with the whole idea of being a new parent and what I was going to do about work that the idea of using anything other than disposables never crossed my mind. When she began solid foods she started getting horrible rashes. I changed diaper brands, wipes, “aired” her out, tried every diaper rash cream in the store and even made trips to the pediatrician on several occasions over her rashes. If I knew then what I know now!

Fast forward four years later, we found out we were expecting again! This time I have been extremely lucky to be able to stay home with my baby (I have a wonderful husband!). Having more time on my hands, I researched a lot of things during my pregnancy; prenatal vitamins, options for birth plans, and cloth diapers.

I think, unfortunately, many people still think of cloth diapers as a piece of fabric held together with pins, how antiquated! The truth is there are so many styles and systems of cloth diapering and many of them are oh so cute!

I will go more deeply into brands and types later. For now I just want to add that, so far, we have not seen any diaper rashes on this little one.

Things you didn’t know you had learned from your parents

As a parent, I often wonder what things about me or my lifestyle will stay with my kids as they grow up.

Recently my 4 year old daughter has been running around with a doll in a stroller. Ever since her little brother made his appearance I have been worried of how she’ll be affected or if she will feel neglected. Thankfully, she is a resilient and intelligent little girl and I’m starting to see she’s going to be just fine.

My mom bought her a doll stroller and that’s how it all began. First she put her dolly in it, strapped her in and took her everywhere. This thing even came with a car seat so here came the dolly on the ride to and from school. One day I’m sitting on my sofa, nursing the baby, here comes my daughter with her dolly “oh, my baby is hungry too!” she declares. Then, she nonchalantly lifts up her shirt and puts her ‘baby’ to her chest. I couldn’t stop laughing.
